Davin Shin
- University of Auckland Bachelor of Music
Davin (Dong Min Shin), came from a family with a musical background and came to New Zealand at the age of 2. After he started learning the piano at age 4, he started to learn the cello at age 9 under Ashley Brown who was back then a cello professor at the University of Auckland, also a member of NZ trio. While under Ashley Brown he had many successes at over 50 local/national competitions where he would often come first place. Davin started receiving lessons from Coral Bognuda, who was also the former head of music at The Auckland University. Davin started high school at St Kentigern College receiving a full music scholarship and when he was in his final year in high school (year 13), received an offer from the School of Music at Auckland University to study under Martin Rummel, who is currently the head of Music. During this time, Davin studied with Martin Rummel with a full Scholarship. Davin went on studying at Auckland University under Edith Salzmann, and graduated with bachelors of Music. He then carried on studying for his post graduate, but then put this on hold to carry on with his fulltime teaching carrier. With over 17 years of cello playing and 10 years of teaching experience Davin really has a great passion for teaching music and can adjust to any levels of teaching adapting to the age and nature of each student. He also has lots of different chamber music/orchestral experiences and spent a year playing with various orchestras in South Korea. Davin’s students had much success in music competitions and grade exams, with none of his students ever getting a mark of under Distinction.
